Cooking Classes

High Country Cooking Classes

Cooking classes are a fun, engaging activity for both adults and children that always results in a meal that the entire class sits down and enjoys together. I have taught cooking classes to culinary students, novice adults and middle school students grades 4th-8th. My classes have a focus on one topic, such as making fresh pasta, but each class also teaches a variety of other skills such as teamwork, food safety and working efficiently in the kitchen.

The following are basic guidelines for my classes:

  • Classes can be taught for groups of 2 to 6 people, ages 10 and up.

  • Classes run 2-3 hours, plus an additional 30 minutes in which the entire class works to clean the kitchen.

  • The class takes place in your kitchen using your pots and pans, but I bring aprons, side towels, cutting boards, knives and any specialty equipment, such as a pasta maker.

  • Each class has a menu that you can choose which items you would like to make.

  • Once I know the menu items you would like to make and the number of people participating, I will develop a class packet that each participant will receive.  The packet will contain the menu, the class schedule, menu assignments for each participant, kitchen safety tips and the recipes.  A digital copy of the packet will also be sent to you.

  • I will shop for all the ingredients and will arrive 1 hour before the class starts to organize the kitchen and set up the workstation for each class participant.

Cooking for and with Kids

One of the most rewarding jobs I had in my career was working as the Nutrition Director for the Marblehead Community Charter Public School (MCCPS), grades fourth through eighth.  I quickly learned that trying to teach children about nutrition through the traditional route of talking about nutrients and saying things like polyunsaturated fatty acids was not going to be effective. So, I decided to do it through healthy, full-flavored food utilizing after school cooking classes and schoolwide tasting buffets served during lunch. This gave me incredible insight into what guides children’s food choices and that getting them to be hands-on with different foods can help motivate them to try these foods.

One of the services I offer is working with families to customize menus to meet the needs of their children and to also teach cooking classes in your home. Cooking classes are fun, engaging, teach important life skills and always end in something delicious to eat!

I’m happy to develop a specific class for your family, but popular classes have been The Art of Fresh Pasta, Healthy Breakfast Dishes and Introduction to Mexican Cuisine. Classes can be developed for children 10 and above and of course they’re great for adults! â€‹
